Overview
Takashimaya Shinjuku is a department store on the south side of Shinjuku Station. The area made up of the department store building and specialty stores such as HANDS (household goods), UNIQLO (clothing), Nitori (furniture), a store for books in English and other non-Japanese languages, and restaurant floors spread over three floors from 12F to 14F is called Takashimaya Times Square. You can buy everything from cosmetics, clothing and food to stationery, craft supplies and kitchenware in one place, so it is a good place for travelers to buy souvenirs all at once. Tax-free procedures for items bought in the department store are done at the Tax Refund Counter on 11F, and if you show your passport you can get a card that gives a 5% discount.

The photos show examples of the store at the time they were taken (October 2026). Sales floors, events and opening hours may change. The floor numbers in this article are the same as the signs in the building (the ground floor is 1F, and the basement floor is B1F).

Step by step
Tax-free procedure (11F)

For items bought in the department store, the tax-free procedure is done not at the sales floor register but at the Tax Refund Counter on 11F, on the day of purchase. The counter accepts applications 11:00–19:30. It applies to purchases made on the department store sales floors on the same day that total ¥5,000 (tax excluded) or more. Who is eligible, which items qualify, and the detailed conditions of the national system are explained in Tax-Free Shopping in Japan | The Refund Method from November 2026 and What to Do When You Leave Japan. Items bought at specialty stores such as HANDS and UNIQLO are not handled at this Tax Refund Counter. Follow the instructions of each store.

- Shop at each sales floor and receive the receipts.
- Take the receipts, passport and purchased items to the Tax Refund Counter on 11F. If you paid for any items by credit card, also bring that card. Only the person who made the purchase can do the procedure; no one else can do it on their behalf.
- Complete the procedure at the counter. 1.55% of the price of the eligible items is deducted as a system usage fee.
- For items paid for by credit card, the name on the card must be the same as the name in the passport. The card must also be signed on the back by the holder.
- The passport must have the stamp showing your entry into Japan. People who entered through an automated gate or a facial recognition gate and do not have the stamp cannot complete the procedure (according to Takashimaya).
- Items cannot be returned after the procedure. There is an upper limit on the number of items that can be handled in one procedure. Check the details at the Tax Refund Counter.
What changes for purchases made on or after November 1, 2026
For purchases made on or after November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free system changes to a method in which you pay the price including consumption tax at the store, and receive a refund of the consumption tax after customs confirmation when you leave Japan (information from the Japan Tourism Agency; Tax-Free Shopping in Japan | The Refund Method from November 2026 and What to Do When You Leave Japan). For items bought on or after November 1, 2026, how you receive the refund at Takashimaya was not yet explained on its official website at the time this article was written (October 2026). Confirm at the Tax Refund Counter when you do the procedure. For purchases made on or before October 31, 2026, when you complete the procedure described above, the consumption tax amount is returned by one of the following methods: cash (Japanese yen), credit card, Alipay or WeChat Pay (according to Takashimaya).
