How to read sizes

In the size guide of Shimamura's official online store, sizes are given as approximate body measurements, not garment measurements.

  • For children's clothes, the size number is the child's approximate height (cm). For example, size 110 is for children 105–115 cm tall, and size 130 is for children 125–135 cm tall.
  • Adult clothing sizes are written with symbols such as S, M, L and LL. The same symbol means different measurements for women's clothes and men's clothes.
Size symbolWomen's clothes (bust)Men's clothes (chest)
S72–80 cm80–88 cm
M79–87 cm88–96 cm
L86–94 cm96–104 cm
LL93–101 cm104–112 cm
  • In the size guide for women's clothes, the approximate height for every size from S to LL is 154–162 cm. The women's size guide also has sizes from 3L to 8L, which are larger than LL.
  • Sizes are only a guide. Each product is made differently, so check the price tag or the product page before you buy.

Shimamura's tax-free conditions

According to Shimamura's tax-free information (checked on October 19, 2026), the tax-free method and conditions are as follows.

  • At the store, you pay the price including consumption tax. After that, you complete the procedure yourself and receive a refund of the consumption tax amount (Refund Method).
  • Tax-free shopping applies when the amount of one payment at the checkout (excluding consumption tax) is ¥5,000 (tax excluded) or more and ¥500,000 (tax excluded) or less.
  • The refund procedure is done with a service called JPrefund.

How the refund procedure works

According to Shimamura's tax-free information, the procedure is as follows.

  1. At the checkout, pay the price including consumption tax.
  2. If you have a smartphone, scan the tax-free transaction code shown by the staff with your smartphone. If you do not have a smartphone, write down the 20-digit number shown by the staff.
  3. Register as a user on the JPrefund website. At that time, also register your passport information, contact details and how you want to receive the refund. If you do not have a smartphone, apply using the number you wrote down in step 2.
  4. When JPrefund has finished confirming your identity and the transaction, the refund is made automatically. The number of days until the refund arrives depends on how you receive it, and is about 1 to 20 days.

Shimamura's information does not say when you should tell the staff that you want to buy tax-free. Tell the staff at the checkout before you pay.

Customs check when leaving Japan

You cannot have them checked after you have checked in your baggage with the airline. Get the customs check before you check in your baggage at the airline counter.

The tax-free conditions and the procedure when leaving Japan are explained in Tax-Free Shopping in Japan | The Refund Method from November 2026 and What to Do When You Leave Japan.
